Die Beste Farbe

Die Beste Farbe deals with the façade of Jakobsplan, a student dorm Plattenbau built in Weimar in the year 1972 by architect Anita Bach. As stated by the city regulations, the façades of most buildings in Weimar are painted in pastel colors in order to conform with the town's classic architectural style. With its off-white walls and GDR style, Jakobsplan goes against the accepted visual canon of the space. After being invited by three artists to participate in a show dealing specifically with the building, I developed the site-specific work Die Beste Farbe. My idea was to create the illusion that the building was going to be renovated and painted with one of the traditional pastel colors, in order to finally fit in with the city. With this idea in mind I placed a ballot box in the entrance hall, together with a short list of possible options. Residents were invited to vote their favorite choice for a new façade.

La instalación El mejor color surgió a partir de una invitación a exponer en Jokobsplan, una especie de monoblock construido como residencia para estudiantes en 1972 por la arquitecta Anita Bach. La mayoría de las fachadas de los edificios de Weimar, donde el mismo está ubicado, están pintadas de color pastel para mantener la identidad clásica que caracteriza a la ciudad. Con sus paredes casi blancas y estilo típico del periodo de la DDR Jakobsplan va en contra de la norma. Mi idea fue crear la ilusión de que el mismo iba a ser renovado y pintado de color pastel para finalmente pertenecer a la ciudad. Con esta idea en mente ubiqué una urna en el hall de entrada para que los residentes puedan elegir el mejor color con su voto.
